Happy 4th!!!

“Any existance deprived of freedom is a kind of death.” ~Gen Michel Aoun
The 4th of July is a time to celebrate America’s independence, our individual independence, and a time to remember the sacrifices that we – as a country and as individuals – have had to make in order to see that freedom become a reality.
Maybe we’re lucky to have this freedom. More than likely, however, we imagined it first and then did, and continue to do, whatever it takes to attain it.
But there are some people alive in America (I’d say living, but the life they lead isn’t really living), who do not have this freedom that should be available to all human-beings. Women and children are brought in to our country every day, hour, minute – with the intent of being sold in to new-age slavery. [Read more]
Brickyard 400!!!
June 29, 2009 by Elizabeth
“My racing career has been a struggle because I never had any money, so it has been one slow step at a time, but I’m a believer that things are brought to you when you’re ready for them. It’s just taken me a long time to be ready for this.” ~Dale Jarrett
Times are tough this year. What if I told you that there’s a way that you can go to the Brickyard 400 for free AND be doing something worthwhile to help those in need in our community?
Tough to turn down, isn’t it?
What if I also told you that you could get a whole group involved? Friends, family, church, work… the possibilities are endless.
The Salvation Army works in conjunction with the IMS during these races. We provide volunteers for the “Yellow Shirts” (safety patrol – you’d be making sure the aisles were clear, no one had glass containers, etc) and they in turn make a $7.00 donation for every hour a volunteer helps at the track.
And you get to see everything that goes on during the race.
Interested? Here are the days we’re recruiting for:
- Friday, July 24 – 7am
- Saturday, July 25 – 6am
- Sunday, July 26 (Race Day!) – 6am
A brief training is required (really, like 15 minutes) and a background check. All volunteers MUST be 18+.
So if you’re a race fan (or think you could be!), give me a call or send me an email and we’ll get you and/or your group set up!

Can one person really make a difference…
June 25, 2009 by Elizabeth
“People never forget that helping hand, especially when times are tough.” ~Catherine Pulsifer
I had an interesting conversation with a close friend last night. He said, “What could I possibly do that will matter. What could I do that would make an impact. Maybe one person really can’t make a difference.”
The funny thing is, this conversation led him to begin naming those people in his life that he wanted to be like. The ones who made a difference. The ones he never thanked, but wanted to emulate. None are famous, they’re just normal, average people like you and me who took the time to care about those around them. [Read more]
Successful Night!

“The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you first find yourself.” ~Mark Caine
Thank you to all volunteers and attendants of “Night in Our City”! Because of you – The Social Services Center raised well over $3,000 to put towards their efforts to shelter domestic violence victims and the homeless in our city.
Check out pictures from the event here!
