At the 5 year anniversary of Katrina, the nation is reflecting this week on tragedy that befell the Gulf Coast so many years ago and how the area has pressed on since. As an integral part of the community, The Salvation Army was there before the storm, and we were there after working to provide support and help rebuild.

The Salvation Army’s Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi Division posted an album on their Facebook page that looks back at their efforts to help those in need during the immediate aftermath. From serving food to providing medical support, The Salvation Army was a shining light during a very dark time.

Colts Give Back To Local Charities

The city of Anderson, as a community, has extended a large hand of welcome to the Indianapolis Colts this summer.

On Wednesday the team extended its hand for a different reason — to put $25,000 into the hands of five local nonprofit organizations.

“We like to be part of the community and show our appreciation,” said Colts owner Jim Irsay during a brief ceremony at the Kardatzke Wellness Center at Anderson University after the team’s morning practice. “The economy here has been tough on jobs and tough on charities. From those who are given a lot is expected a lot.”

The Salvation Army Aids 300 Families In Pakistan Amidst Flood Aftermath

The Salvation Army in Pakistan continued its initial response to the floods that have are now thought to have affected 20 million people by distributing bedding and cooking utensil packs to 300 families in Charsadda. An assessment team visited Charsadda a week earlier and discovered that the floods had devastated the town, wrecking homes and businesses.

The distribution team included Lieut-Colonel Yousaf Ghulam (Chief Secretary of the Salvation Army’s Pakistan Territory) and Lieut-Colonel Rebecca Yousaf (Territorial Secretary for Women’s Ministries).

Students Get Back-To-School Shopping Spree from Target

More than 100 local students in need had the opportunity to visit an Indianapolis Target store and purchase backpacks, calculators, pens and pencils, art supplies, binders, clothing and other must-have supplies just in time for back-to-school. The Salvation Army and Target are helped a total of 12,000 K-12 students across the country gear up for the upcoming academic year and get ready to succeed in school with the Target School Spree. Each child, selected by The Salvation Army, was awarded an $80 Target GiftCard to purchase back-to-school supplies. They were also given a reusable Target shopping bag and paired with a volunteer chaperone.
