A South African Krugerrand was dropped into a Salvation Red Kettle in Johnson County yesterday evening at the K-Mart on US 31 South.  The coin, which is estimated to be worth about $1,300, was donated anonymously and wasn’t found until late in the evening when the kettles were being counted.  There was an anonymous call telling The Salvation Army that the Kruggerand would be dropped in K-Mart Kettle that evening.

This is the third straight year the mysterious donor has placed a Krugerrand in a Johnson County Red Kettle; a tradition The Salvation Army is hoping will spread throughout Central Indiana. Read more

When you’re a Colts fan, a little wind and rain won’t keep you away from a big game.  Nor will it dampen your generousity, as was the case yesterday outside of Lucas Oil Stadium.

Thousands of Colts fans showed their team spirit and their caring  spirit as they donated over 3,000 toys to WISHTree, a partnership between WISH-TV8 and The Salvation Army.  The toys will be distributed to nearly 900 families in need this week during the annual Salvation Army Toy Shop. Read more

Entering The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Training Facility Saturday, Dec. 5, volunteers came upon a table lined with zip codes. Under each zip code was a stack of residences in all directions of Indianapolis that volunteers could visit to give away gift bags for this year’s Gift of Warmth distribution event.

Gift of Warmth focuses on giving a little holiday cheer to the elderly, the physically disabled and those who are, in some way or another, shut-in their homes. Some of the gift recipients are people recommended by community organizations or visiting nurses. They spread this cheer by visiting and giving away Christmas gift bags to people in the community.

Last Wednesday volunteers came to wrap and assemble the gifts bags which included such gifts as blankets, teddy bears and snacks. Read more

The Salvation Army Band opened the Tree of Lights Kickoff with some familiar Christmas Carols.

The start of The Salvation Army’s fundraising campaign for the Christmas season was commenced November 19 by the kick-off ceremony, Tree of Lights. The goal for this year’s campaign is $3 million, the largest goal ever set by The Salvation Army in Central Indiana. The start of the campaign was marked by the outdoor event and the illumination of the pine tree located outside the Salvation Army’s Headquarters at 3100 N. Meridian St.

“Last year, because of the overwhelming generosity of Hoosiers like you, nearly 37,000 people received assistance from The Salvation Army,” Major Vicki Amick, leader of The Salvation Army’s Indiana Division, said to attendees.

The goal is a direct response to a 19 percent increase in request for assistance that the Salvation Army has seen in 2009. The money raised will go towards supporting Salvation Army programs and services throughout Central Indiana.  Read more
