Longtime donor, Mrs. Laura Lewis, made her annual gift to a group of senior citizens this week – new shoes and socks. Each year, Mrs. Lewis provides funding for both children and seniors in need to shop for a pair of shoes. The happy recipients are invited on the shopping trip to Shoe Carnival, through a local Salvation Army Corps.
It seems such a simple gesture – probably taken for granted by most of us. But for these seniors, a new pair of shoes can mean the difference between being able to walk to the Corps for Sunday services and lunch or being stuck at home. With all the choices in a store full of shoes, these men and women mostly all considered which shoes would be comfortable throughout the day – many with conditions that cause their feet to swell and ache.
After making their purchases and upon leaving the store, several seniors offered their thankfulness on video to Mrs. Lewis. She’s not been able to witness the excitement firsthand for some years, but she’ll be thrilled to know that her wishes to provide something she often went without as an orphan, have been carried out through her generous gifts to The Salvation Army.
