Harbor Light rolls dice on gambling addiction program

July 26, 2009 by Kristen · Leave a Comment

Jeff rejoins us after a 3 week hiatus and is welcomed by a rousing bow hunting story out of Charlottesville’s Salvation Army. But Kristen’s not buying into Jeff’s urban bow hunting fundraiser idea. We’ll have to leave bows and arrows to the fine folks in Charlottesville. Oh, and don’t forget to check out Leo’s experience with Tampa’s Salvation Army as a homeless man on facebook.

Our guest today is David Thompson, Harbor Light’s Clinical Director. David joins us to share how The Salvation Army is reaching out and ministering to those struggling with addictions right here in our city. As the economy worsens, so do requests for addiction services – enough to cause the need for a waiting list. David shares about our newest program for gambling addiction. Mike and Kristen find themselves without a third co-host, but with plenty to talk about. It’s officially time to begin work on the 15th annual WIBC Radiothon and we’re thrilled that Quinn Buckner is taking another turn as event chair. To learn more, check out our brand new website.

The topic of the day seems to be the economy. Mike shares big news for Kokomo as Trilogy Health makes a generous contribution to the Salvation Army’s food bank. Following this theme of tough economy, job loss and neighbors in need, we welcome Pam Altmeyer, President/CEO of Gleaners Food Bank. Pam shares the ins and outs of stocking a food bank and getting food out to the charities that serve those in need – like several of our Salvation Army locations. With the average American just two paychecks away from needing food and shelter assistance, this episode is very “now”.

Our weekend “sunshine in the morning”, Justin Bessler may not know what The K is, but he does know his pizza! The gang puts their Love Kitchen/NORAD tracking system on hold to talk to Stephanie Pate, our childcare director at our women and children’s shelter in downtown Indy.

Stephanie tells her story of her triumph over domestic violence and how she ended up dedicating her life to serving other women and children fleeing abuse.

From meeting the needs of those coping with the South’s heatwave to opening a new shelter to take in those unable to make ends meet during these tough economic times, the trio shares tale of The Salvation Army’s efforts to offer a hand to those in need across the country.

After the news of the day, Jo Ann Remender joins the show to explain Planned Giving and how we can leave behind a legacy of service by designating The Salvation army in our wills, and more. Then Justin hones in on some photos of donuts and the topic shifts to Planned Giving’s Donut Girls. Jo shares the history of how the Donut Girls served the troops in both world wars. Listen to hear the story and how the Donut Girls are serving today’s veterans.
