Live From Haiti
January 31, 2010 by Mike
We change the fomat a little bit in this epsisode and jump right into a conversation with Captain Marcos Ramirez in Haiti. Captain Marcos is part of the Indiana Disaster Team that was sent down to Haiti on January 18. Since that time, Captain Marcos, Captain Geff Crowell, and Jerry Larsen have been working almost non-stop to bring food, water, medical attention, and hope to the people of Haiti.
Captain Marcos has been assigned to be The Salvation Army Liason to the UN Cluster Groups and Captain Crowell has been put in charge of food distribution. Jerry is the administrator in charge of certain logistics and operations. The team found out on Thursday that they will be staying another 2 weeks as the Army’s work expands in Haiti.
Becasuse there is amlost no commuication system in Haiti, the audio quality of the phone interview is very poor at times. Still, it’s great to hear Captain Marcos’ voice and to hear him talk about his experiences.
The Salvation Army and Social Media
January 24, 2010 by Mike
Social media has become a big part of our society and The Salvation Army in Indiana is taking advantage of it. We have multiple Facebook pages, Twitter feeds, blogs, and now we have a Social Media Manager. Deborah Simon joined The Salvation Army’s Media Department this past September and nobody was happier to see her start than Mike. Let’s face it, he was getting a little overwhelmed after the departure of a certain former RSR co-host.
Back to Deborah. She hit the ground running as we entered our busiest season (Tree of Lights) and hasn’t stopped since. Seriously, we can’t get her to take a break. She is constantly online. The response to this boost in social media has been amazing and we’re adding fans and followers everyday.
Deborah visits RSR by phone and talks to Jeff and Mike about her role in The Salvation Army, and how social media is helping our efforts in Haiti.
The Salvation Army in Haiti
January 17, 2010 by Mike
It only took The Salvation Army a matter of minutes to begin assisting the vicitms of the earthquake that devastated Haiti earlier this week. That’s because The Salvation Army has been meeting needs in Haiti for 60 years. The Army runs dozens of schools, clinics, hospitals, children’s homes, and corps community centers.
Steve Diaz was stationed in Haiti as the Director of the Children’s Home in Port-Au-Prince. This past summer he returned to the United States and now live in the St. Louis area. Steve joins Jeff and Mike on the show this week to talk about Haiti, the relief efforts there, and the work of The Salvation Army.

Radiothon: Day 3
December 13, 2009 by Mike
So much food, so little sleep. Jeff, Mike and Kristen begin day 3 of Radiothon bright and early on Red Shield Radio. It’s been a great weekend and Sunday promises a great finish with Amber Stearns hosting us through the end of the marathon of giving. Coming up today, our good friend and great guest, Jason Wetzel from Walmart. Jason has promised us a surprise and we can’t wait to see what it is.
As if we weren’t already exhausted, also on the docket for the day is our annual WISH-Tree toy collection at Lucas Oil Stadium. So, we’ve sent half the staff to collect toys while the other half stays at Emmis to finish Radiothon. Yes we’re tired, but when we think of the great need in Central Indiana our second wind kicks-in and we’re ready to keep going.
Terri and Big Joe

Less than a second. That’s the time amount of time it took for us to completely lose control of today’s show. That’s because our guests are know how to have fun on the radio. Terri Stacy and Big Joe Staysniak of the WIBC Morning News. Laughter ensued the moment the music started and we knew we were in for a great show.
Terri and Joe are both long time veterans of the annual WIBC Radiothon. They share their passions for the Radiothon and the work of The Salvation Army. Terri also talks about the very first Radiothon which was in a tent on Monument Circle. My how we’ve grown. We are so thankful for the dedication and hard work of Terri, Joe, and the rest of the WIBC staff. Radiothon; 15 years and still going.
