Jeff Smulyan and Pat Walsh of Emmis Communications ring bells outside of WIBC.

Along with the first snow of winter today Monday, Dec. 7 came the first day personnel of Emmis Communications rang bells to lead up to this year’s annual Radiothon event this weekend. WIBC will be hosting a phone bank fundraiser for The Salvation Army’s Tree of Lights Campaign and they will continue to ring bells all week.

“We are very proud to be apart of The Salvation Army’s Campaign,” CEO of Emmis Communications Corporation Jeffrey H. Smulyan said.

Smulyan served as just one of the bell ringers from Emmis Communications on this chilly day with a high of 35 degrees.

“If I can stand out in the cold for an hour, it’s the least I can do,” Smulyan said.

Each day of the Radiothon, starting on Friday, Dec 11 and ending Sunday, Dec. 13, has a specific sector in which The Salvation Army is raising money for. Friday the theme is homelessness, Saturday is focusing on children and Sunday is for disaster services.

Expectations are high for Radiothon this year. The Tree of Lights Campaign goal is to raise $3 million for this Christmas season. “We always hope to do better than the previous year,” said Smulyan.
