After a long string of hot, humid, and rainy weather, the clouds broke just in time for the 18th Annual Golf 4 Giving Outing, a fundraiser put together by The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary. Ninety-one players hit the greens at the Golf Club of Indiana in support of central Indiana’s Salvation Army facilities, which include the Harbor Light Center and the Ruth Lilly Women and Children’s Center in downtown Indianapolis.

Participants enjoyed 18 holes of golf, as well as a putting competition and three meals courtesy of Square Donuts, Applebee’s, Stone Creek Dining Company, and Handel’s. Throughout the day, participants enjoyed special perks like a “pay the pro” hole and a chance to win a car, courtesy of Stoops Buick GMC Plainfied, by hitting a hole-in-one. A silent auction after the event included two Gibson guitars, golf packages for courses across Indiana, original artwork, signed Gary Varvel posters, and gift baskets featuring the best attractions and retailers in central Indiana. By the end of the bidding, the auction had raised $6,100 to go toward the event total.

All money raised at Golf 4 Giving goes toward a “Wish List” assembled by the Women’s Auxiliary. These dedicated volunteers work with Salvation Army facilities in and around Indianapolis to make a list of items that are outside of existing budgets. These items can vary as widely as a new freezer for a food pantry to safer sports equipment for a youth program. Every year, the Women’s Auxiliary strives to raise enough funds – largely through Golf 4 Giving – to grant these wishes.

Thanks to the Wish List, these facilities can keep providing much-needed services and maintain existing programs in need of extra funds. Most of the money granted covers one-time or unexpected costs, so the Wish List looks different every year. The one constant: the happy and relieved smiles when wishes are granted. For every extra dollar covered by the Wish List, a dollar is freed up to help our neighbors find emergency assistance, shelter from abuse, or a hand to guide them through recovery.

Thank you to our 2016 Golf 4 Giving sponsors, auction donors, and participants for giving back through The Salvation Army and helping our neighbors “get out of the rough” during times of great need. You are truly a blessing!
