Emergency Assistance in Disaster Operations Course

  • What: Emergency Assistance in Disaster Operations Course
  • When: Wednesday, February 18; registration 8-8:15 a.m.; class 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Where: The Salvation Army EDS Training Facility, 4020 Georgetown Rd, Indianapolis IN 46254
  • Class: (Prerequisite: Intro to The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services) This course is designed to train disaster workers and social workers to serve as disaster caseworkers during a disaster relief operation. Participants will learn practical skills such as interviewing clients, filing forms and determining eligibility based upon The Salvation Army standards.

FedEx Canteen Dedication

  • What: FedEx Canteen Dedication
  • When: Thursday, April 30
  • Where: Emergency Disaster Services Training Facility, 4020 Georgetown Rd, Indianapolis IN
  • Why: This is the official dedication of a new EDS canteen (mobile feeding truck) donated by FedEx. This vehicle will assist with disaster response and enable The Salvation Army to provide food and hydration to survivors, first responders and work crews.

Red Kettle Cook-Off

National Salvation Army Week

  • What: National Salvation Army Week
  • When: May 11 – 17
  • Why: The week of November 18 – December 4, 1954 was declared by the United Stated Congress and proclaimed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to be the first National Salvation Army Week. Today, the dates have changed, but the work of The Salvation Army that was recognized has not – to serve those in need without discrimination.To The Salvation Army, National Salvation Army week is a time for us to thank all of our generous donors and volunteers who allow us to accomplish all that we do.

Volunteer Appreciation Night

  • What: Volunteer Appreciation Night at the Indianapolis Zoo
  • When: May 11
  • Where: Indianapolis Zoo
  • Why: This annual event is a way to thank our many volunteers in Central Indiana for their hard work and dedication to the services and programs at The Salvation Army. Volunteers enjoy our city’s world-class zoo and join us in recognizing outstanding adult and youth volunteers.

Older Adult Spring Luncheon

  • What: Older Adult Spring Luncheon
  • When: May 20
  • Where: Indiana State Fairgrounds
  • Why: Serving the seniors is a ministry that is carried out with a luncheon in both the spring and during the Christmas season. Guests come by special invitation through the local Salvation Army corps in their community.

National Donut Day

  • What: National Donut Day
  • When: 6 a.m. Friday, June 5
  • Where: Monument Circle
  • Why: The Salvation Army will serve free coffee and donuts, courtesy of Square Donuts, on Monument Circle to celebrate National Donut Day and to thank and show appreciation to our volunteers, donors, employees and community partners. Donut Day was started by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.

Christmas in July

  • What: Christmas in July

  • Events: Casual For A Cause, Angel Tree, Back To School
  • Why: Christmas in July is a month-long event that encourages our corporate and organization partners to get involved by hosting events or fundraisers. All contributions from Christmas in July go to local Salvation Army programs and services that provide help and hope to families and individuals affected by crisis, poverty, hunger, isolation and troubled relationships.

  • Why: For many years a long-time Salvation Army donor has made sure the children of Indianapolis have new shoes for school. Growing up as an orphan, Lewis never had the luxury of receiving a new pair of shoes as a child.

Golf 4 Giving

The Most Amazing Race

  • What: The Most Amazing Race
  • When: August 29
  • Where: Across the City of Indianapolis
  • Why: This inaugural race pits teams against each other in a race across the city. Pit stops along the way will challenge racers in a wide variety of physical and mental tasks as they compete to be the first team to cross the finish line. This event raises funds to support Salvation Army programs across central Indiana.

Red Kettle Christmas Campaign Kick-Off

  • When: Kickoff Ceremony 11:00 a.m. November 11; Campaign runs from November 13 through December 31
  • Where: The Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters

Gift of Warmth

  • What: Gift of Warmth Packing and Deliveries

  • Why: The Salvation Army has given small gift packages to older adults and others who are homebound or in the hospital due to physical limitations as part of the Gift of Warmth ministry.

  • What: The WIBC Radiothon for The Salvation Army Bed & Bread Club
  • When: December 4-5
  • Where: Friday Dec. 4 at WIBC / Emmis Communications, Saturday Dec. 5 at Sullivan Hardware and Garden
  • Why: Radiothon is a fundraising campaign benefiting The Salvation Army Bed & Bread Club. There are more than 100 Bed & Bread Clubs located all over the country — all with the same mission: to provide food and shelter to the hungry and homeless. The Clubs help The Salvation Army provide nutritious meals through their feeding programs, groceries from their food pantries, or vouchers to local supermarkets. Clubs also help fund The Salvation Army’s shelters for the homeless, provide motel vouchers for families and individuals who need a temporary place to stay, and assistance with rent or utilities to prevent folks from becoming homeless in the first place.

Kroger Kettle Challenge

  • Where: Kroger stores in Central Division (Indiana and parts of Ohio, Illinois & Michigan)
  • Why: Kroger is a long-time supporter of The Salvation Army, so each year its managerial staff enjoy a friendly competition between central Indiana stores to see who can raise the most funds in a single afternoon of bell ringing. Local and regional staff man the kettles and encourage shoppers to support Salvation Army services in their community.
