The weather is changing and it’s time to start thinking about getting new winter coats for the kids. For many Hoosier families, though, the extra expense of new coats for growing children just isn’t in their budgets. That’s where the Coats for Kids program comes in.

Launched 29 years ago by Tuchman Cleaners, this program quickly developed into a partnership with television station WTHR and The Salvation Army of Central Indiana. The goal was to ensure that every child in the city who needed a winter coat could get one, regardless of the family’s situation. Retired weatherman Bob Gregory has acted as spokesman for Coats for Kids from its earliest days, and continues to help promote, collect, sort coats and help families shop on distribution day.

“We’re all focused toward giving a youngster a nice warm coat for the upcoming winter,” explains Bob. “Now, he doesn’t care whether it’s a brand new coat or whatever. He just wants it to fit and provide warmth.”

Coats for Kids helps thousands of kids every fall because of the incredible generosity of the people of Central Indiana. On September 7 Tuchman Cleaners began collecting new and gently used coats from customers who stop by any of its 25 Central Indiana locations. The coats are carefully cleaned by the staff at Tuchman Cleaners, and then stored by our friends at Two Men and a Truck. Next month, the thousands of donated coats will be sorted by gender and size and the Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds will be transformed into an enormous coat shop.

Colts fans headed to the October 4 game at Lucas Oil Stadium can meet WTHR personalities like Angela Buchman, John Stehr, Nicole Misencik and Sean Ash as we collect coats across from the stadium on Capitol Avenue. This year, we need at least 9,000 coats in order to serve all the families who attend distribution day on October 17.

If you want to help, but do not have a coat to donate, visit our secure Online Coat Shop today to order a $25 coat. It will be shipped directly to The Salvation Army and added to those collected at Tuchman Cleaners September 7 – October 10 and before the Colts game on October 4.

Every coat, hat and glove donated will help a child in need right here in our community. Will you be a part of something wonderful this fall and donate, too?
