The Salvation Army Aids 300 Families In Pakistan Amidst Flood Aftermath

The Salvation Army in Pakistan continued its initial response to the floods that have are now thought to have affected 20 million people by distributing bedding and cooking utensil packs to 300 families in Charsadda. An assessment team visited Charsadda a week earlier and discovered that the floods had devastated the town, wrecking homes and businesses.

The distribution team included Lieut-Colonel Yousaf Ghulam (Chief Secretary of the Salvation Army’s Pakistan Territory) and Lieut-Colonel Rebecca Yousaf (Territorial Secretary for Women’s Ministries).

Haiti: 6 Months Later

The Salvation Army will complete the construction of 600 housing shelters through the Transitional Shelter Program in Jacmel, Haiti this week, to assist in relocating earthquake-displaced Haitians back to their home communities. Over the past six months The Salvation Army has transitioned from providing for immediate needs, including temporary shelter, food, water and medical attention to providing long-term recovery services to help return survivors to a level of normalcy in their lives. The long-term rebuilding process has employed more than 400 Haitians as carpenters and construction crew-members to assist in reconstruction efforts. Read more

The Salvation Army Provides Shelter And Meals Ahead Of Hurricane Alex

Dallas, TX: – The Salvation Army in McAllen, TX is providing shelter and food to people as South Texas communities brace themselves for the effects of Hurricane Alex.

On Tuesday, June 29, The Salvation Army opened the doors of its shelter in McAllen to residents evacuating ahead of the storm. The shelter accommodated 73 people of which 23 were evacuees. The Salvation Army also provided food support, serving 140 meals, and remains on stand-by should additional support be required at any of the Hidalgo County designated shelters.

Mobile feeding units (canteens) are in place and ready to serve in Corpus Christi, Harlingen, McAllen and Laredo. Eight additional mobile feeding units (canteens) have been mobilized to the State Staging Area in San Antonio along with staff and volunteers. The Salvation Army mobile kitchen, capable of preparing 20,000 meals daily, and generator have been made available and are ready for deployment if necessary. The Salvation Army will also provide clean-up kits in the event excessive flooding becomes an issue caused by the first Hurricane of the season.
“The Salvation Army is anticipating several days of sheltering and mass feeding along the Gulf Coast area”, said Major Terry Israel, Divisional Secretary in Texas.“ These services will be available at least through Friday, and as long as the need exists.”

Salvation Army Responds To Mine Explosions Near Charleston, WV

Salvation Army officers, church members, and volunteers from Beckley, West Virginia offered their service and support Monday at the disaster scene in the Upper Big Branch Coal Mine, where a massive explosion is said to have killed 25 miners and trapped several more.

Headed by Captains Robert & Monica Barber, The Salvation Army provided food, drinks, emotional and spiritual care throughout the night to those affected by the mine explosion and the 150 rescue workers that were present.

Initial relief efforts by the Army have been suspended today while the authorities begin a recovery operation that requires holes to be drilled into the ground to vent the toxic gas that has filled the mine. All site crew, except for state patrol, have been released but The Salvation Army is expected to return at the request of the state’s Emergency Operations Center.
