It’s only the beginning of August, but planning for the eighth annual Apple Fest on Monument Circle is well under way!  Every year, the kick off of the fall season takes place with grilled favorites from Applebee’s, music from local favorite cover band Bandwagon, warm apple cobbler, and other apple goodies.  Did you know that Indiana is home to about 4,000 apple orchards (http://www.orangepippin.com/orchards/united-states/indiana)?  That is a huge number!

Unfortunately, here is another big number…  1,842.  That is the number of children under twelve years old in Marion County that are considered homeless by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as of January 2011.  Marion County schools reported 2,925 total children that are staying with friends or extended family, living in hotels or motels, or are on their own (http://www.chipindy.org/).

Because of supporters like you, for some children hope is found at The Salvation Army’s Shelter for Women and Children.  Through your generosity The Shelter for Women and Children put a roof over the heads of 500 of those children last year, as well as provided many other services and continued support programs for more than 215 other children.

Thursday, October 6th marks the eighth annual Apple Fest on Monument Circle and all proceeds from this lunch time event benefit The Salvation Army’s efforts to end homelessness for Indiana women and children.  Invite your co-workers to join you for lunch from Applebee’s, warm apple cobbler, music by Bandwagon, other organizations fighting homelessness, businesses supporting The Salvation Army’s efforts, and more!  Mark your calendar for October 6th and plan to stop by between 10am and 2pm.  Can’t wait to see you there!

Oh, and if you want your business in front of a lunch crowd of about 1,000 people, let me know.  I have ways that you can make that happen and do the most good!

Take care,

Mel
