Tree of Lights Five Percent Short of Goal

The Salvation Army finished its 2012 Tree of Lights Campaign at just over $3.1 million.  The Army set a goal of $3.3 million for the annual campaign, which ran from November 17, 2012 through January 31, 2013, but finished about $180,000 short.

Although they didn’t reach their goal, The Salvation Army is still positive about the results of the campaign and grateful to Hoosiers for their generosity.  “We still have a lot to be thankful for,” says Major John Turner, Indiana Divisional Commander.  We raised nearly $1 million in Red Kettles and even though we finished short, this is still the third highest campaign total we’ve ever had.  We could not have done that without the generous donors in this community.”  The results of the campaign represent 21,254 donors who made 38,383 gifts, which is an increase over last year.

The shortfall could mean The Salvation Army will have to dip into its strategic reserve or it could mean re-budgeting and allocating less funding to certain areas.  It does NOT mean cutting back programs and services to men, women, and children here in Central Indiana.  “The need in this community is still growing, and we are committed to meeting that need in 2013,” says Major Turner.  “There are still eight months left in our fiscal year and that’s a lot of time for people to continue their support of The Salvation Army and the people we serve everyday.”

Last year – through the generosity of Central Indiana donors – The Salvation Army served more than 3,662 people struggling with substance abuse, provided more than 101,000 safe nights of shelter for the homeless including women and children fleeing domestic abuse, served more than 500,000 meals to men, women, and children in need, and provided a safe environment for hundreds of area children to go after school.
